The Bale

[English text below] The Bale mencerminkan kecenderungan lahirnya hotel-hotel butik jenis baru di Bali.

The Bale signifies a new breed of boutique hotels in Bali. Rather than leaning towards vernacular design, the architects are aiming for a more modern look.

Located on the dry limestone hills of Nusa Dua, the hotel has a view on the sea but no direct access to the beach. The architects, working together with the landscape architect, take advantage of the hill’s steep contour by placing the villas according to the slope of the hill. Therefore creating an unobstructed view of the beach from each villa.

The hotel is designed as a sequence of architectural experiences. Starting from the arrival court and the concierge area, visitors are welcomed with a reflecting pool in the center and the long and wide cantilevered roof of the porte cochere. Then they are led through a log corridor with more reflecting pools on both sides, into the lobby. Beyond, there is an all-white limestone courtyard and a flight of stairs leading up to the villas.

While the villas are surrounded by low limestone walls, the feeling of openness pervades. The villas are spacious and kept cool by usage of traditional thatched roof. Each has small garden and a borderless swimming pool with the view of the sea and the valley below.

The architects of this hotel receive a citation award from The Indonesian Institute of Architects in 2002 for the commercial building category and also The Best Small Boutique Hotel Award in the same year.
