[English text below] Hal pertama yang dapat menarik perhatian pada masjid ini ialah ketiadaan kubah, yang merupakan karakteristik klasik dari sebagian besar masjid. Namun ternyata kubah lebih memiliki kedekatan identitas dengan budaya Timur Tengah, daripada sebagai identitas religius umat Muslim. Artinya, kubah bukanlah merupakan elemen yang esensial dalam mendesain masjid.

Masjid Al-Irsyad menggunakan batu-batu yang ditumpuk sehingga menjadi fasad utama, yang memperkuat impresi tektonik. Tumpukan batu ini membentuk kaligrafi Islam sebagai elemen grafis yang mengingatkan untuk beribadah. Bentuk kotak merupakan bentuk yang paling efisien, karena umat Muslim beribadah dalam bentuk barisan-barisan lurus. Kolom struktural disusun sedemikian rupa sehingga fasad seolah terlihat tak disokong oleh struktur apapun. Bentuk ini juga mengacu pada bentuk Ka’bah di Mekkah, sebuah struktur yang paling penting di dunia Islam, yaitu orientasi sujud umat Muslim.

Sebuah Minaret berada tepat di sebelah masjid dalam rupa sebuah menara. Sejak dulu, Minaret adalah tempat para muazin mengumandangkan adzan untuk memanggil umat tiap kali waktu berdoa (sholat) tiba. Sejak penggunaan pengeras suara, kini Minaret lebih dianggap sebagai ikon untuk mengenali lokasi sebuah masjid.

Dengan kapasitas yang mampu mengakomodasi sekitar 1.000 orang, masjid ini didesain untuk dapat menyatu dengan alam. Tumpukan batu memungkinkan ventilasi alami yang membatasi penggunaan AC. Dikelilingi oleh air, temperatur di dalam dan di sekeliling masjid akan menjadi lebih sejuk di musim kemarau.

The first thing about this mosque that might catch one’s attention is the absence of a dome, which is almost always a quintessential characteristic of mosques. However, domes are actually more of a regional identity of the Middle East rather than Islam’s religious identity; hence it is not an essential element when designing a mosque.

Al-Irsyad Mosque uses stacked stones as its main façade to create a tectonic effect, which embodies Islamic text or calligraphy on the façade as a graphic element and reminder of prayer. The square shape seems as the most efficient shape since Muslims pray in straight rows, Structural columns are arranged in such a way that the façade appears as if it is not supported by any frame. This shape also alludes to Ka’bah in Mecca, the most important structure in the Islamic world, to which all Muslim’s prayers are directed.

The tall pole-like structure next to the square building form is called a Minaret. In the past, it was used for calling out all Muslims to pray by placing a muazin, or a summoner, on the top of a minaret whenever prayer time had come. Today, loudspeakers are used instead and minarets serve more of iconic functions; for people to locate a mosque from far.

With a capacity to accommodate approximately 1,000 people, this mosque is also designed to blend in with nature. The stacked stones allow for natural ventilation without the need for air-conditioning. Surrounded by water, the temperature in the mosque and around it is lower during the dry seasons.
