The Fill-in House

[English text below] Ada dua poin penting yang menjadi perhatian arsitek ketika mendesain rumah ini. Pertama, kondisi lahan yang tidak terlalu luas – sementarea program ruang yang dibutuhkan cukup padat – dan kedua, lokasi lahan yang berada di daerah rawan banjir.

Tidak seperti sebagian besar proyek rumah tinggal yang hanya dihuni keluarga inti, proyek ini mengakomodasi tiga generasi dalam satu lahan yang terletak di sebuah pemukiman yang cukup padat di kawasan Jakarta Utara. Untuk menampung jumlah penghuni yang tidak seditkit di atas lahan berukuran 17 x 15 meter, tentu merupakan tantangan tersendiri bagi arsitek. Mengingat kebutuhan ruang yang harus dipenuhi cukup banyak, bangunan pun dibut bertingkat. Masalah banjur musiman diatasi dengan menunggikan lahan, dengan cara menguruknya hingga setinggi dua meter dan membuat retaining wall untuk menyangga tanah serta menahan air. Melalui cara ini, rumah dapat dibangun lebih tinggi dari permukaan jalan dan terhindar dari banjir.

Meskipun ruang-ruang dalam hunian ini cukup beragam – ruang duduk, ruang makan, dapur yang cukup lapang, kamar tidur utama, kamar tidur orang tua, tiga kamar tidur anak, kamar mandi di setiap kamar tidur, powder room, ruang hobi, ruang kerja, dan ruang servis – arsitek berhasil menciptakan layout yang jauh dari kesan sumpek. Dengan menerapkan konsep open plan pada zona publik, hubungan antar ruang terasa lebih cair. Begitu pula dengan pengaturan lantai yang seluruhnya dibuat void sehingga kesan mengalir juga terasa secara vertikal.

Upaya optimalisasi ruang yang dilakukan arsitek pada desain rumah tinggal ini yaitu dengan memanfaatkan ruang sirkulasi – seperti tangga – sebagai tempat penyimpanan. Ruang multifungsi juga muncul di lantai dua, di mana koridor yang menghubungkan kamar tidur juga berfungsi sebagai area kerja. Meja yang memanjang di koridor selain sebagai tempat kerja juga berfungsi sebagai railing.

Two important points became the consideration for the architect in designing this house. First, the limited site – and the need for various rooms – and secondly, the site was located in a flood-area.

Unlike most housing projects which were usually meant for nuclear families, this project was designed to accommodate three generations in a single site located in one of the most densely populated areas in North Jakarta. Constructing a house to accommodate a large number of occupants in 15 x 17 meters was a challenge for the architect. Considering the large number of rooms needed, the house was built like a multi-story building. The problem of seasonal flooding was solved by elevating the site by two meters and constructing a retaining wall to support the soil and hold back the flood. This method made the house elevated above the roof and able to avoid the flood completely.

Even though the house contained various sort of rooms – living room, dining room, a spacious kitchen, master bedroom, parent’s bedroom, three kid’s bedrooms, a bathroom in each bedroom, powder room, hobby room, study room, and service area – the architect successfully design a layout that was far from crowded. By applying the open plan concept to the public zones, the interaction between each room became more fluid. The void on each of the upper floors made the fluid interaction also felt vertical.

The effort to optimize space done by the architect in this house was apparent y utilizing circulation areas – such as the stairway – as storage. On the second floor, there was also a multifunction room: the corridor connecting the bedrooms also functioned as the study room. The long table in the corridor served as both a study table and railings.
