The Luc Lifestyle: Eksperimen Spasial di Kawasan Tropis Brawo, Bali

Presented by Angga Prastika from Atelier GVD, at ARCHINESIA “10X10=INFINITY” in Plumeria Ballroom, Padma Resort Legian, Bali; Friday, October 17, 2025

(uci)

The Luc Lifestyle: A Spatial Experiment in Bali’s Tropical Landscape

Amid the coastal stretch of Brawo, Bali, The Luc Lifestyle emerges as a spatial experiment that blends commercial, hospitality, and villa functions within a single, dynamic tropical environment. The project was envisioned to introduce a new landmark in an area already dense with commercial activity. Its design approach stands out through a bold yet contextual play of form, color, and spatial experience.

Rather than presenting a uniform row of buildings on a flat and linear site, Atelier GVD began with an exploration of modular compositions and fragmented volumes. Each mass is arranged in a zigzag formation—pushing forward and pulling back—to create a rhythmic visual pattern while shaping an active circulation spine along the main axis. This strategy not only enriches the spatial experience but also enhances the interaction between the twelve tenants. The form takes inspiration from the dulang, a traditional Balinese offering tray, which is reinterpreted into a contemporary geometric composition accented by circular elements that serve as focal points.

From this rhythmic composition, the site unfolds into a main public space where architecture meets human activity. At the heart of The Luc lies an open amphitheater that functions as a multifunctional stage for welcoming guests, hosting public events, or gathering communities. The presence of this open space reinforces the project’s character as a lively destination rather than a mere passageway. Surrounding it, tropical vegetation is arranged along the site’s horizontal lines, softening the commercial tone and reconnecting the experience to Bali’s lush natural environment.

Another layer of boldness emerges through the project’s color and material palette, which defines its visual identity. Atelier GVD chose a Himalayan pink tone—an intuitive yet deliberate choice in today’s social media-driven visual landscape. The color is striking yet designed to remain timeless. Drawing inspiration from mid-century aesthetics, the interplay of color and material creates a distinctive yet balanced character. Vegetation once again plays a crucial role as a natural counterpoint, blending the architectural gesture with its tropical setting.

More than a commercial complex, The Luc Lifestyle embodies how architecture can negotiate with dense urban contexts and overstimulated visual environments. (uci)
