Scorpio House: Menangkap Karakter Kalajengking melalui Arsitektur Bambu

(afm)

Scorpio House: Capturing the Scorpion’s Essence through Bamboo Architecture

Scorpio House is one of the villas located in the Veluvana Bali area, designed by Studio WNA. To present a unique and authentic spatial experience, Studio WNA drew inspiration from the scorpion—a creature with a complex character. This character is then translated through traditional bamboo construction, which blends strength, flexibility, and sustainability.

The characteristics of the scorpion are clearly visible in the large, curved roof design, which resembles a protective shell. The structure, made of natural and black bamboo, is bent so that it spans widely without central columns, creating a spacious and open room. The dark-hued roof covering creates visual depth, as if one is entering a ‘natural cave’. This immersive atmosphere is further enhanced by the natural light filtering through the skylight that splits the roof.

Underneath the curved roof, the floor plan flows naturally, following its shape. All activities within the 60 m² space merge seamlessly without partitions. The main bed, located at the center of the room, is draped with gauze curtains, while service areas such as the toilet and shower are simply enclosed by white curtains. Both elements deliver an experience of being one with nature. Bamboo and rattan furniture also foster a harmonious connection between the indoor space and the outdoor landscape, while simultaneously creating a warm ambiance.

This impressive spatial experience continues with a hidden surprise. Under the stairs at the entrance, a trapdoor leads visitors down to a plunge pool located beneath the building. Although only 40 m² with a shallow depth of 25 cm, the pool area, complete with a daybed and a swing, becomes an intimate and calming place to relax. Much like the hemolymph that maintains the scorpion’s body balance, the pool water provides thermal and emotional equilibrium for the space and its occupants.

Overall, the villa successfully merges the assertiveness of its exterior form with the warmth of the atmosphere within, much like the scorpion, which appears solid yet holds a softness inside. Through the use of bamboo as the primary medium, Scorpio House affirms that tropical architecture can be adaptive and aesthetic while remaining explorative in form. (uci)
