[English text below] Karimun Jawa merupakan kepulauan di Jawa Tengah yang dikenal dengan wisata pantainya. Selain pantai, penangkaran hiu juga menjadi salah satu aktivitas yang cukup umum dijumpai di kawasan ini. Kondisi tersebut menjadi latar sekaligus tantangan bagi proyek Pusaran Ocean Deck, yang dirancang untuk berdiri di tengah laut.

Area ini sebelumnya telah memiliki talud batu berbentuk kotak sejak 1990. Talud merupakan struktur penahan yang berfungsi menahan tekanan tanah atau air sekaligus melindungi tepi lahan dari erosi. Untuk memberikan karakter baru pada area tersebut, eksplorasi bentuk kemudian dilakukan. Sesuai namanya, ‘pusaran’, desain ocean deck mengambil inspirasi dari gerakan berputar dan menerapkannya melalui bentuk deck yang melingkar. Bentuk tersebut membuat dek terlihat lebih dinamis sekaligus menjadi elemen utama yang diekspresikan melalui susunan kayu ulin bekas.

Penggunaan material menjadi salah satu perhatian utama dalam proyek ini, terutama untuk memastikan kehadiran struktur tidak berdampak buruk terhadap biota laut. Karena itu, ocean deck memanfaatkan kayu ulin bekas konstruksi sebagai material utama. Material tersebut juga diperoleh dari kawasan sekitar. Saat menelusuri wilayah setempat, tim menemukan banyak kayu bekas konstruksi yang sudah tidak terpakai. Kayu-kayu tersebut kemudian dimanfaatkan kembali untuk membentuk struktur dek.

Kayu dengan berbagai ukuran, lebar, panjang, dan ketebalan disusun secara tumpang tindih menggunakan sistem pasak enteng, menyerupai susunan sirip ikan. Dari kejauhan, susunan kayu tersebut sekilas tampak ‘kacau’, tetapi tetap membentuk komposisi yang harmonis satu sama lain. Pola ini sekaligus memperkuat karakter ‘pusaran’ yang menjadi gagasan utama desain.

Pusaran Ocean Deck tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai tempat untuk menikmati pemandangan laut. Struktur ini dirancang untuk mewadahi berbagai aktivitas dalam beberapa lapisan ruang. Secara keseluruhan, terdapat delapan area yang dapat digunakan, yaitu dek melompat, dek doa, area berjemur, dek komunal, dek diving dan snorkel, viewing deck, ruang penyimpanan, serta dek pengamatan hiu dan area penangkaran hiu.

Kehadiran area penangkaran hiu menjadi salah satu daya tarik utama Pusaran Ocean Deck. Sementara itu, dek doa dihadirkan sebagai ruang ibadah untuk mengakomodasi kebutuhan masyarakat sekitar yang mayoritas beragama Islam. Dengan menggabungkan fungsi rekreasi, pengamatan, dan aktivitas masyarakat, Pusaran Ocean Deck menjadi struktur yang tidak hanya hadir di tengah laut, tetapi juga merespons karakter serta kehidupan di sekitarnya. Pusaran Ocean Deck

Karimun Jawa is an archipelago in Central Java known for its coastal tourism. Beyond its beaches, shark conservation and breeding facilities are also relatively common in the area. This context presented both the setting and a unique challenge for Pusaran Ocean Deck, a project designed to stand in the middle of the sea.

The site had already featured a box-shaped stone talud since 1990. A talud is a retaining structure designed to hold back soil or water while protecting the edge of the land from erosion. To give the area a new character, the design explored a different approach to form. True to its name, pusaran, which means “swirl,” the ocean deck draws inspiration from a circular, swirling movement and translates it into a rounded deck. The form gives the deck a more dynamic appearance, while also becoming the main design element expressed through the arrangement of reclaimed ulin wood.

Material selection was one of the project’s key considerations, particularly to ensure that the structure would not negatively affect the surrounding marine ecosystem. For this reason, the ocean deck primarily uses reclaimed ulin wood from previous construction projects. The material was also sourced locally. While exploring the surrounding area, the team found a large amount of unused timber left over from construction. Rather than leaving the material unused, the wood was repurposed to form the structure of the deck.

Timber pieces of varying widths, lengths, and thicknesses are arranged in an overlapping pattern using a simple peg system, resembling the arrangement of fish fins. Viewed from a distance, the wooden elements may initially appear somewhat ‘chaotic’, yet they come together to create a harmonious composition. This pattern further reinforces the pusaran character that serves as the project’s central design idea.

Pusaran Ocean Deck is not simply a place to enjoy the view of the sea. The structure is designed to accommodate a range of activities across multiple levels. In total, it consists of eight areas: a jumping deck, prayer deck, sunbathing area, communal deck, diving and snorkeling deck, viewing deck, storage area, and a shark observation deck connected to the shark conservation area.

The shark conservation area is one of the main attractions of Pusaran Ocean Deck. Meanwhile, the prayer deck provides a dedicated space for worship, accommodating the needs of the surrounding community, which is predominantly Muslim. By bringing together recreation, observation, and community activities, Pusaran Ocean Deck becomes more than a structure set in the middle of the sea; it responds to the character of its surroundings and the life that takes place within it.
