[English text below] Kinematic Pavilion dirancang sebagai instalasi arsitektur yang dapat bergerak, berubah, dan beradaptasi terhadap berbagai situasi ruang maupun aktivitas. Desainnya berangkat dari eksplorasi hubungan antara arsitektur, performativity, dan interaksi pengguna. Bentuk kubah pada paviliun terinspirasi dari mekanisme lensa kamera yang mampu membuka dan menutup, menghadirkan pengalaman ruang yang dinamis sekaligus imersif. Pendekatan ini menjadikan paviliun tidak hanya sebagai wadah aktivitas, tetapi juga sebagai elemen aktif yang terus berubah mengikuti pergerakan, suara, dan keterlibatan penggunanya.

Sistem kinetik menjadi inti utama dalam desain paviliun ini. Pada lapisan bagian dalam, elemen robotik dipasang dan diprogram untuk bergerak mengikuti irama musik. Gerakan tersebut menciptakan latar spasial yang responsif bagi pertunjukan maupun interaksi pengunjung. Ketika performer bergerak di dalam ruang, pavilion turut “merespons” melalui perubahan bukaan, ritme gerak, serta permainan cahaya dan bayangan yang dihasilkan oleh struktur kubahnya. 

Material yang digunakan juga memperkuat karakter eksperimental paviliun. Bagian kulit luar menggunakan pelat tembaga berpatina yang dipilih karena sifatnya yang dapat didaur ulang dan kemampuannya membentuk perubahan visual alami seiring waktu. Permukaan tembaga tersebut perlahan mengalami oksidasi ketika terpapar cuaca, menghasilkan lapisan warna yang terus berkembang sebagai bagian dari proses desain itu sendiri. Sementara itu, roller blinds bekas dipotong dan dianyam menjadi struktur kubah berputar. Anyaman tersebut menghadirkan kualitas ringan dan transparan yang mengingatkan pada tirai panggung tradisional.

Ketika paviliun dipindahkan ke kawasan hutan di Bintaro, desainnya kembali mengalami transformasi. Struktur kubah tetap dipertahankan, tetapi lapisan kulitnya dikupas agar hubungan antara ruang dan alam menjadi lebih terbuka. Pada fase ini, paviliun berkembang menjadi analog musical architecture yang memungkinkan pengunjung berinteraksi melalui suara dan gerakan secara langsung.

Instrumen tongophone berbahan pipa PVC bebas timbal ditambahkan sebagai bagian dari sistem ruang. Pipa-pipa tersebut disetel ke tangga nada sederhana sehingga dapat dimainkan secara spontan oleh berbagai kalangan. Kehadiran instrumen tersebut memperlihatkan bagaimana elemen arsitektur dapat berfungsi sekaligus sebagai perangkat musikal. Di sisi lain, penggunaan drum dan lantai berbahan plastik daur ulang serta sekam padi menghadirkan eksplorasi baru terhadap kualitas bunyi dan tekstur material upcycle.

Kinematic Pavilion juga menunjukkan pendekatan desain yang adaptif melalui penggunaan ulang struktur utamanya. Alih-alih dibangun untuk satu lokasi dan satu fungsi, struktur baja paviliun terus digunakan kembali, dipindahkan, lalu dirancang ulang sesuai konteks baru. Pendekatan ini memperpanjang umur material sekaligus memungkinkan arsitektur terus berevolusi bersama komunitas dan lingkungan yang berbeda.

Melalui desainnya, Kinematic Pavilion menawarkan gagasan arsitektur yang lebih cair, responsif, dan partisipatif. Teknologi kinetik, eksplorasi material daur ulang, serta keterlibatan pengguna berpadu menjadi pengalaman ruang yang terus berubah. 


 

Kinematic Pavilion

Kinematic Pavilion was conceived as an architectural installation that can move, transform, and adapt to different spatial conditions and activities. Its design stems from an exploration of the relationship between architecture, performativity, and user interaction. The pavilion’s dome-shaped form was inspired by the mechanics of a camera lens that opens and closes, creating a spatial experience that feels both dynamic and immersive. Through this approach, the pavilion functions not only as a container for activities but also as an active architectural element that continuously responds to movement, sound, and the presence of its users.

The kinetic system forms the core of the pavilion’s design. Robotic elements were installed within the inner layer and programmed to move in rhythm with music. These movements create a responsive spatial backdrop for both performances and visitor interaction. As performers move through the space, the pavilion also “responds” through shifting openings, rhythmic motions, and the interplay of light and shadow produced by the dome structure itself.

The choice of materials further reinforces the pavilion’s experimental character. The outer skin is clad with patinated copper plates, selected for their recyclability and their ability to develop natural visual changes over time. As the copper surface is exposed to weather, it gradually oxidizes and forms evolving layers of color, becoming part of the design process itself. Meanwhile, discarded roller blinds were cut and woven into a rotating dome structure. The woven surface introduces a lightweight and semi-transparent quality reminiscent of traditional stage curtains.

When the pavilion was relocated to a forest site in Bintaro, the design underwent another transformation. The dome structure was retained, but its outer skin was removed to create a more direct relationship between the space and its natural surroundings. In this phase, the pavilion evolved into an analog musical architecture that encourages visitors to engage through sound and movement.

Tongophone instruments made from lead-free PVC pipes were introduced as part of the spatial system. Tuned to simple musical scales, the pipes can be played spontaneously by people of different ages and backgrounds. Their presence demonstrates how architectural elements can simultaneously function as musical instruments. At the same time, drums and flooring made from recycled plastic and rice husks introduce new explorations of sound quality and the tactile properties of upcycled materials.

Kinematic Pavilion also demonstrates an adaptive design approach through the reuse of its primary structure. Rather than being built for a single location or fixed function, the steel structure continues to be reused, relocated, and redesigned according to new contexts. This strategy extends the lifespan of the materials while allowing the architecture to continuously evolve alongside different communities and environments.

Through its design, Kinematic Pavilion proposes a more fluid, responsive, and participatory approach to architecture. Kinetic technology, recycled material exploration, and user engagement come together to create a spatial experience that is constantly evolving.
