Kampung Mrican Karya SHAU Raih Ammodo Award 2025 for Social Architecture

[English text below] Kampung Mrican Phase 1 di Yogyakarta, karya SHAU, resmi meraih Ammodo Architecture Award 2025 for Social Architecture, menjadikannya salah satu dari dua penerima penghargaan tertinggi di kategori tersebut. Penghargaan ini diberikan kepada proyek yang menunjukkan dedikasi mendalam pada arsitektur sosial dan ekologis, sekaligus menegaskan kontribusi SHAU dalam memberdayakan komunitas melalui desain yang responsif dan berbasis kebutuhan nyata.

Ammodo Architecture menilai Kampung Mrican sebagai proyek yang “menggunakan struktur kota yang sudah ada, dengan nilai keberlanjutan dan sosial sebagai inti,” serta menghadirkan ruang publik baru yang mengubah sungai dari batas menjadi tulang punggung kampung. Microlibrary Mrican menjadi pusat aktivitas baru: sebuah bangunan panggung yang berfungsi sebagai ruang belajar dan titik pertemuan yang teduh, berpasangan dengan pendopo yang direvitalisasi sebagai ruang komunal terbuka. Praktik desain partisipatif yang konsisten, penggunaan material lokal, intervensi adaptif terhadap banjir, hingga hadirnya kebun komunitas yang dikelola kelompok perempuan menjadikan proyek ini contoh inspiratif arsitektur yang merawat dan memberdayakan.

Sebagai bagian dari rencana lanjutan, SHAU akan menggunakan dana penghargaan ini untuk membangun Microlibrary inklusif di Jakarta, yang dirancang untuk komunitas difabel dengan akses kursi roda, navigasi taktil bagi penyandang disabilitas netra, serta ruang baca semi-terbuka yang memanfaatkan rindang pohon eksisting. Sementara itu, pengembangan Microlibrary Pringwulung di Yogyakarta akan mencakup pemasangan panel surya dan sistem irigasi otomatis yang terhubung ke kebun komunitas, memperkuat pendekatan desain yang rendah biaya, responsif lingkungan, dan berbasis partisipasi. Kampung Mrican by SHAU Wins Ammodo Award 2025 for Social Architecture

Kampung Mrican Phase 1 in Yogyakarta, a project by SHAU, has officially won the Ammodo Architecture Award 2025 for Social Architecture, positioning it as one of the two top recipients in the category. The award is dedicated to projects that demonstrate a deep commitment to social and ecological architecture, affirming SHAU’s contribution to empowering communities through responsive, needs-based design.

Ammodo Architecture commended Kampung Mrican as a project that “utilizes the existing urban structure, with sustainability and social value at its core,” and introduces new public spaces that transform the river from a boundary into the village’s backbone. The Mrican Microlibrary serves as the new hub of activity: an elevated structure that functions as a learning space and a shaded meeting point, paired with a revitalized pendopo (pavilion) as an open communal space. Consistent use of participatory design practices, local materials, adaptive interventions against flooding, and the presence of a community garden managed by a women’s group make this project an inspiring example of architecture that nurtures and empowers.

As part of their ongoing plans, SHAU will use the award funds to construct an inclusive Microlibrary in Jakarta. This new library is specifically designed for the disability community, featuring wheelchair accessibility, tactile navigation for the visually impaired, and a semi-open reading area that capitalizes on the shade of existing trees. Meanwhile, the development of the Pringwulung Microlibrary in Yogyakarta will involve the installation of solar panels and an automatic irrigation system connected to the community garden, further reinforcing the project’s low-cost, environmentally responsive, and participation-based design approach.
