Lorphoonphol Rice Mill

Lorphoonphol Rice Mill

Located in one of Thailand’s major rice-producing regions, Lorphoonphol Rice Mill reimagines agricultural infrastructure through a design approach that responds to climate, workflow, and human experience. Situated within a naturally formed basin that collects rainfall from surrounding mountains, the facility serves a large number of surrounding rice farms. Its modernization transformed the mill into one of the largest in Nakhon Sawan Province, with a daily milling capacity of 500 tonnes of rice.
Three primary challenges drove the project. The first concerned the environmental conditions of the site. The second challenge was the large amount of dust produced during the milling process. The final issue involved circulation.
Rather than replacing the original structure, the design retained the existing four-storey building and repurposed it entirely as office space. To visually connect the old structure with the new extension, the office building was wrapped in perforated steel sheeting. This layer improves ventilation while softening the building mass’s industrial character.

The extension reorganizes the workflow of the complex. While the weighing station remained in its original location, the payment area for farmers was relocated to the new building. A curved block wall became the project’s key architectural element, separating public circulation from back-of-house operations. The wall’s geometry also increases the amount of usable surface area, allowing more openings and service points where farmers can receive payment more efficiently.

Designed with future growth in mind, the second floor of the extension was planned as a flexible space for additional offices and a rice laboratory. This upper level is connected visually to the workers’ canteen below through a dome-shaped skylight, bringing daylight into the interior while creating a stronger spatial relationship between levels.

Material innovation also plays a significant role in the project. To address problems of water penetration and dust accumulation, the architects developed a custom triangular brick for the exterior walls. The brick features a zigzag profile that reduces direct exposure to rain and dust while creating a textured façade. Compared to concrete blocks, the use of brick also provided advantages in weight, waterproofing, and construction cost.
Beyond efficiency and industrial performance, the project also introduces moments of comfort within the working environment. Outdoor resting areas beside the reservoir provide workers with shaded spaces to pause and enjoy the landscape. Through its careful integration of climate-responsive strategies, circulation planning, and material experimentation, Lorphoonphol Rice Mill demonstrates how industrial architecture can become both highly functional and spatially sensitive.
