Ia mendasarkan desainnya pada riset dan pengamatan, tidak hanya terhadap hal-hal yang terkait dengan fungsi dan kenyamanan, juga lingkungan serta sosial-ekonomi. Ia menyatakan bahwa rumah-rumah adalah sel tunggal yang meregenerasi dirinya membentuk jaringan dan tubuh yang lebih baik. Filosofi yang dikenal dengan istilah ‘sel tunggal’ ini menjadi dasar perumusannya dalam pemikiran yang lebih luas, seperti sponge city dan woodification.
Setelah menyelesaikan pendidikan sarjana arsitektur di Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, sosok kelahiran Yogyakarta, 1968 ini sempat berkarier di beberapa biro arsitektur. Ia pernah bekerja di PAI Jakarta tahun 1994, DP Architects Jakarta tahun 1997, dan DP Architects Singapura pada 1998. Tahun 2008, Adi Purnomo mendirikan biro arsitektur mamostudio di Bogor, yang kemudian pindah ke Serpong, Tangerang pada 2016.
Beberapa karyanya antara lain Condovillas dan TK Pahoa di Gading Serpong-Tangerang, lalu Rumah Jati Asih-Bekasi, Renovasi Stadion Tenis Gelora Bung Karno-Jakarta, dan Tanah Teduh no. 4 Jakarta. mamostudio telah menerima banyak penghargaan, di antaranya IAI Awards 2005 untuk Urban House dan Ciganjur House, IAI Awards 2008 untuk Setiabudi House dan IAI Awards 2015 untuk Studio Cahaya. Selain mendesain, mamostudio juga aktif mengikuti pameran karya dan instalasi seni, baik skala nasional maupun internasional. Antara lain Pameran IAI di Jakarta (2008), Architecture Instalation di Jakarta (2010), dan Pameran Segar: Tiga Dalam Benak (2015). Adapun yang berskala internasional antara lain International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2008 di Belanda, World Architecture Festival 2009 di Barcelona, pameran IAI di Rotterdam, Belanda (2012), dan Tropicality Revisited di Frankfurt, Jerman (2015).
Karya-karyanya pernah diulas di berbagai media, seperti Domus No. 923, Italia (2009), MARK No. 21 (2009) dan 44 (2013), Belanda, AD Architecture Digest 1/2010, Jerman (2010), dan ARCHINESIA, Indonesia (2014). Karyanya juga dimuat dalam buku-buku arsitektur, seperti The New Asia Pacific Houses (Patrick Bingham Hall, 2010), The New Indonesia House (Robert Powell, 2011), dan Tropical Eco House (Imelda Akmal, 2015). Adi Purnomo is known for his unique approach to architecture, he’s less about eye-pleasing design and more about the environment and social economy elements. He declares that houses are a single cell that regenerates itself and constructs a better body system. This idea called “single-cell” is mainly used to formulate broader concepts, such as sponge city and woodification.
After earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, this 1968 born started his career by joining a number of architecture firms. He worked at PAI Jakarta in 1994, DP Architects Jakarta in 1997, and a year later joined the DP Architects Singapore. In 2008, he established his own architecture firm called mamostudio in Bogor, and then moved to Serpong, Tangerang in 2016.
Some of the firm’s most notable works include Condovillas and Pahoa Kindergarten Gading Serpong, Jati Asih House Bekasi, renovation of tennis court at Gelora Bung Karno, and Tanah Teduh no. 4 Jakarta. This architecture firm has earned several accolades such as IAI Awards for Urban House (2005), Ciganjur House (2005), Setiabudi House (2008), and Studio Cahaya (2015). Moreover, mamostudio was also a finalist at WAF World Architecture Festival 2009 for Studi-o Cahaya in Cultural Category, achieved Best Asia Pacific Property Awards 2014 for Pahoa Kindergarten in Public Service Development Category and Green Leadership Award FutureArc for Tanah Teduh no. 4.
