Description

TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT FOR JAKARTA CITY
After being delayed for nearly two decades, finally, Jakarta -the capital city of Indonesia-, began the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) operation since March 24th, 2019. They are called Ratangga which means “war chariot” in ancient Javanese language. The existence of the MRT or Ratangga will change the city landscape, the way people move, and the lives of Jakarta people themselves.

Through Cover Story for ARCHINESIA #16, we present a six-page essay written by Ar. Mustapha Kamal, an architect from Malaysia. He shared various insights for the public, especially Jakarta, about the future of transportation and how the experience of space and places arising from the emergence of the MRT can affect the resilience and rejuvenation of Jakarta City.

Besides, we also continue to display selected architectural works in Southeast Asia, with a variety of cutting edge design concepts. One of them is The Apurva Kempinski by DCM Jakarta, which is located on an area of 11 hectares in Bali. There is also Café del Mar by Aboday, SALA Samui Chaweng Resort by onion, STONE HOUSE by MM ++ Architects with a building design that maximizes the beautiful view around the site. Also, we present ARTOTEL and the As-Sobur Mosque in Tubaba by andramatin.

INSIGHT : BUDIMAN HENDROPURNOMO
We had a chance to interview Budiman Hendropurnomo the principal of DCM Jakarta, who loves storytelling.
During their 30 plus years of existence, DCM Jakarta has also shaped the face of Indonesia’s contemporary architecture and contributed to the development of the country’s architectural discourse. The interviews were not only talking about their design approach, method, and process but also about meaningful architecture.
