WAF 2021 shortlist unveils best-designed buildings and landscapes from around the world

[English text below and provided by World Architectural Festival] Pada 19 Juli 2021, World Architecture Festival (WAF) mengumumkan daftar karya arsitektur terbaik dari praktisi dan arsitek terkemuka di seluruh dunia yang telah terbangun pada rentang tahun 2019 hingga 2021. Sekitar 200 bangunan dipilih dari 700 lebih pendaftar. Mereka berasal dari berbagai negara, seperti Cina, Jepang, hingga Meksiko serta Ekuador.

Beberapa diantaranya adalah lanskap perkotaan yang menghubungkan gurun di Abu Dhabi dengan kota modernnya. Ada juga gedung pencakar langit Heatherwick Studio di Singapura, serta Eden, sebuah pusat pameran budaya di China yang menampilkan paviliun matahari dan bulan. Festival WAF 2021 bertemakan ‘”Resetting the City: Greening, Healthy, and Urbanism” (Mengatur Ulang Kota: Penghijauan, Kesehatan, dan Urbanisme). Ajang penghargaan ini pun berhasil menarik 732 entri dari 55 negara dalam 20 kategori bangunan dan lanskap yang sudah terbangun. Angka ini mengalami peningkatan 44% dibandingkan WAF tahun 2019.

WAF akan diadakan di pusat pameran FIL, Lisbon pada 1-3 Desember 2021. Acara ini pertama kalinya diselenggarakan di ibukota Portugal, setelah sebelumnya dilaksanakan di Amsterdam, Barcelona, Singapura, dan Berlin.

Arsitek besar dunia lainnya yang terpilih pada tahun ini diantaranya: B.I.G. Architecture, Zaha Hadid Architects, Foster + Partners, Rafael Viñoly Architects, serta Grimshaw Architects dan Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Bangunan dan lanskap yang telah terbangun pun dibagi menjadi 20 kategori. Diantaranya adalah Housing (Hunian), Office (Perkantoran), Transport (Transportasi), Health (Kesehatan), hingga School (Sekolah). Ada juga Civic and Community (Bangunan Sipil dan Komunitas), Sport (Olahraga), Religion (Agama), Culture (Budaya), dan Production Energy and Recycling (Produksi Energi dan Daur Ulang). Setiap proyek yang masuk dan mewakili tiap kategori memiliki desain paling indah hingga terinovatif dalam arsitektur kontemporer.

Arsitek dan desainer di balik setiap proyek terpilih pun akan bersaing untuk mendapatkan hadiah secara langsung di WAF pada bulan Desember. Presentasi dari desain-desain yang terpilih akan disaksikan oleh lebih dari 100 juri internasional di depan delegasi festival. Lalu, pemenang setiap kategori bakal berlomba satu sama lain pada hari terakhir festival. Mereka akan memperebutkan penghargaan tertinggi, yaitu World Building of the Year, Future Project of the Year, Interior of the Year, dan Landscape of the Year.

Direktur program WAF, Paul Finch berkomentar: “Kami senang dengan kuantitas maupun kualitas proyek yang masuk pada tahun ini. Hal ini membuat WAF menjanjikan untuk menjadi program penghargaan paling kompetitif yang pernah kami jalankan, dan kami berharap dapat bertemu dengan para arsitek terpilih di Lisbon.”

‘Super Jury’ untuk bangunan terbangun yang akan menentukan World Building of the Year 2021. Mereka adalah Jeanne Gang (prinsipal dari Studio Gang), Abdelkader Damani (Artistic Director), Frac Centre-Val de Loire | Biennale d’Architecture d’Orléans, Kim Herforth Nielsen (Co-Founder sekaligus Prinsipal 3XN Architects), serta Christina Seilern (Prinsipal Studio Seilern).

Sedangkan ‘Super Jury’ untuk Landscape of the Year meliputi: Robert Schäfer (Arsitek Lanskap & Jurnalis), Brita von Schoenaich (Prinsipal dari Bradley-Hole Schoenaich Landscape), Lily Jencks (Pendiri LilyJencksStudio | JencksSquared), Todd Langstaff-Gowan (Arsitek Lanskap, Sejarawan, Penulis, serta Kolektor), dan Todd Longstaffe-Gowan Landscape Design.

Some of the best architecture by today’s foremost practices is revealed as the World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards announces its 2021 shortlist, celebrating buildings and landscapes to have been completed across the world between 2019 and 2021. The 200-strong shortlist has been selected from over 700 entries from countries ranging from China and Japan to Mexico and Ecuador.

Amongst the shortlist for the WAF Awards, the world’s biggest architectural awards program, are a stylized urban landscape linking Abu Dhabi’s desert to its modern city grid; Heatherwick Studio’s Singapore skyscraper, Eden; China’s Culture Exhibition Centre featuring a sun and a moon pavilion, and tourist development on a Persian Gulf island built to empower the local community.

The theme for the 2021 edition of the festival is: ‘Resetting the City: Greening, Health and Urbanism’ and the awards attracted 732 entries from 55 countries, submitted across 20 completed buildings and landscape categories; an increase of 44% in submissions from 2019’s edition of the festival.

WAF will reconvene this year in Lisbon, at the FIL exhibition center, from 1-3 December, the first time the event has been hosted in the Portuguese capital following previous editions in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Singapore, and Berlin.

Other major world architects shortlisted this year include B.I.G. Architecture, Zaha Hadid Architects, Foster + Partners, Rafael Viñoly Architects, Grimshaw Architects and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). The 20 completed buildings and landscape categories range from Housing, Office, Transport, Health and School to Civic and Community, Sport, Religion, Culture, and Production Energy and Recycling, with entries representing the most beautiful to the most innovative in contemporary architecture.

The architects and designers behind each shortlisted project will compete for category prizes live at WAF in December. Presentations of the shortlisted designs will be made to more than 100 international juries in front of festival delegates. Category winners then compete against each other on the festival’s final day to compete for the ultimate accolades of World Building of the Year, Future Project of the Year, Interior of the Year, and Landscape of the Year.

WAF program director Paul Finch commented: ‘We are delighted with both the quantity and quality of this year’s entries. This promises to be the most competitive awards program we have ever run, and we look forward to meeting the shortlisted architects in Lisbon.’
