Selasar Sunaryo Art Space
Selasar Sunaryo Art Space is located on the slopes of Dagi Hills, North Bandung, not far from the city center. Constructed in four years (1993-1997) and open to the public since September 1998, the building is a result of a collaboration between Sunaryo, a contemporary artist, and Baskoro Tedjo, an architect. The artist wished to create a public space that would also function as an art gallery. At the beginning of the design process, Sunaryo specifically requested three mains requirements for the art space: first, the artist wanted the building to be designed so that it would be able to display his artwork; second, he requested that the whole building should use the architectural elements of West Java in its definite representation of the characteristics and identity of his artwork, and third, the art space was to unite the general public with arts and artistic activities in an intimate dialogue.
Selasar Sunaryo Art Space was funded by the artist himself, which brought a special kind of burden to the architect Baskoro Tedjo. The architect eventually decided to design a sustainable building with minimal maintenance. The sustainable concept is interpreted as architecture that grows in time, according to the needs of its occupants. The idea of a minimal maintenance building is realized by embellishing the art space with as little detail and decorative elements as possible. Here, the architect deliberately designed the building to be the background of the artwork displayed within it, in order to make the artwork speak louder.
The art space is also equipped with a Ruang Sayap (wing gallery) which is reserved for exhibiting local and foreign artwork; Bale Tonggoh, a semi-permanent gallery and activity space; Bale Handap, where artists create their works; Stone Garden, an open space used for exhibiting Sunaryo’s artwork made of stone; a bamboo house that accommodates artists who wish to stay over; an outdoor café; an amphitheater; a resource center, and a garden and contemplation area. Selasar Sunaryo Art Space won the IAI Award in the Cultural Institution category in 2002.
