Seminyak Design Week 2018

Seminyak Design Week, held for the first time in 2018, will gather key players of the design industry: from the architect, interior designer, product designer, fashion designer, artists and many more. This is one event you wouldn’t want to miss.

 

Global cities around the world have started their own Design Week events as an annual agenda. There are Berlin Design Week, Tokyo Design Week, as well as Milan, Singapore and Chiang Mai Design Week to name a few. As one of the first design festivals in Indonesia, especially in Bali, Seminyak Design Week 2018 [SDW2018] tries to facilitate a collaboration within all participants in creating innovations and the much-needed solutions to build a better business that also involves the local community. This event is a meeting point where the best talents and design businesses in Bali, as well as other areas of Indonesia, gathers with Bali-based international designers to collaborate for the aforementioned purposes. This is also a platform where both participants and the visitors could experience the importance of design through fun activities.

 

According to Hermawan Dasmanto, lead architect of ARA Studio, design festivals such as Seminyak Design Week holds an important role for cross-disciplinary practices and significant in increasing awareness and knowledge as a key to a better future.

 

Uma Seminyak will host the Seminyak Design Week 2018 or SeminyakDW2018 event which will take place from 4-13 May, 2018 located at three main venue Uma Seminyak, KE{M}BALI Innovation Hub and Seminyak Village. With the theme of Design for Better Community, SeminyakDW2018 invites around 100 national and international designers to participate in series of events consisting of Exhibition, Inspiring Talk Show, Workshops, Competitions and Design Trails. Press conference and Press preview will be happening at Seminyak Village on May 4, 2018, at 3 – 5 pm. And, proceed with a community gathering party that will be held at Uma Seminyak on May 4, 2018, at 6.30 pm, marks the opening of the SeminyakDW2018.

The inaugural exhibition of SeminyakDW2018 will be held at two main venues Uma Seminyak and Seminyak Village. This exhibition will bring together dozens of product, ranging from architecture, interior, furniture, homewares, design products, design graphics, fashion, to craft designs. Including on the exhibition: andramatin, Yokasara, Budi Pradono, SHAU, Largo, Casa Studio, Morfologix, Urbane, HAP (Han Awal & Paskal), Magno & Spedagi by Singgih Kartono, Santai by Dennis Pluemer, BYO Living by Lim Masulin, Studio Hiji by Abie Abdillah, Eva Natasa, CushCush, Ong Cen Kuang, Craft District, Studio Mari Ubud, ADGI (Indonesia Graphic Design Association), Suku Tangan, Salaga, Siji, Oka Diputra, Mena, House of Rumantra, Cinta Bumi Artisan, Vitarlenology, Art of Whatever, and many more.

 

The Inspiring Talks program will take place at KE{M}BALI Innovation Hub on 5-6 May 2018, from 9 am – 6 pm. This program features 22 thought leaders in business, design, and creator to discuss how design can help build businesses, improve sustainability, engage communities, enrich people’s lives and to be a better community. Tickets for Inspiring Talks are available and can be purchased through the official website www.seminyakdesignweek.com. Close to the end of the event, Uma Seminyak will host ArchiTalks which will present 12 architects who will share their designs thoughts. This ArchiTalks event is open to the public and is free.

 

SeminyakDW also holds a competition that can foster the spirit of creating good design, especially young people to be creative and dare to show off, including “Our Daily Live – 1 Minute Insta Video” competition presented by Embara Films & SeminyakDW, “Inspiring Lifestyle Of Creative Millenials Generation” poster design presented by MLDSPOT & SeminyakDW; and also “Bali Today” tote bag design competition presented by Senidibali & SeminyakDW.

 

Series of workshops will also enliven the event, including workshops with Monez, Ketut Sulistyawati, Fellexandro Ruby, and tu.wa.ga (landscape designer community).

 

Satellite Events will add buzz to the Seminyak Design Week. We activated other space beyond Seminyak to be part of this festival. Sekolah Tinggi Desain (STD Bali) will hold an exhibition entitled “Design + People = Better Life” in Creativepreneur Space STD Bali (4-13 May 2018).

Meanwhile, CushCush will present “Natural Curiosities” a tribute to natural wonders, artisans, and designers. Held from 11 Mei – 11 Juni 2018, an exhibition that pays tribute to natural wonders, artisans, and designers; Three components that initiate the journey of CushCush explorations 16 years ago in Bali until today. An exhibition that invites all to see, think and imagine.

 

On the afternoon of May 6, 2018 start from 6pm, the public will be invited to enjoy the “Laklak and Wine” an opening night of a collaborative exhibition between Ong Cen Kuang and Eva Natasa. This collection of two young designers opens for public from 7 – 13 May 2018 (9 am – 4 pm) at Ong Cen Kuang showroom in Banjar Kwanji.

 

In addition to the satellite event, Seminyak Design Week also activates several venues such as Hubbali Legian, Kolektiv, ViVeRe. HubBali Legian will host various Talks sessions from 8 – 12 May 2018. One of them is inspiring talks with Genta Shimaoka & Sekar Wulandari Yogaster from Sukutangan. “Don’t Judge The Book By Its Cover” is an old saying that is long overdue, especially if we are talking about books and its position as a part of a commodity. With the rapid growth of local and international book industry nowadays, major and independent publishers have been striving to publish great titles. Thousands of books are published every month, within various themes and genres, waiting to be picked up by readers. How do graphic design and illustration take part in this industry? How to make a book cover design that is not only visually pleasing and has selling value, but is also clever in conveying the story and interpreting the text?

 

While Kolektiv which is a fusion of coffee shop, concept store, and social hub will host series of talkshow, live painting and launching of Ride inc. X Diella Maharani and local artist Ketut Sedana. Not far from Kolektiv, ViVeRe who recently opened their latest showroom will also host an open house and workshop about the importance of e-commerce in creative industry world.

 

Indigo Hotel and Katamama Hotel will open its door for SeminyakDW’s Design Trails limited to 30 people, they will pack a resort tour to explain in details about their unique and distinctive architecture and design.
