OHD Museum

[English text below] Magelang terletak di provinsi Jawa Tengah.

Magelang is located in Central Java province. The Regency is known for its many tourist attractions, the most notable one is the 9th-century Buddhist temple, Candi Borobudur. Magelang also became home to painters, sculptors, dancers, musicians, performance artists, and art collectors. Along with the growing presence of Indonesian artists and people’s interest in the art scene, many museums and art galleries emerged. Oei Hong Djien, one of the leading art collectors in Magelang, established OHD Museum where he showcase his contemporary artworks collections. Furthermore, the existence of OHD Museum gives the opportunity for artists to have more space to exhibit their works.

OHD Museum by d-associates architects is situated on a 1,600 square-metre plot of land. The museum housed more than 2,000 artworks ranging from paintings, sculptures, installations, and new media art. The building makes use of an old tobacco warehouse which is painted black so that the walls could serve as a backdrop for the installations as a wall accent that greets the visitors. The striking colour also helps the building to stand out in its neighborhood that is dominated by residential and commercial buildings.

To enter the museum, visitors must go through a concrete alley. Gaps are designed at the sides of the alley to allow an interplay of light and shade. Once visitors pass the alley, they will see a courtyard. The courtyard serves as an outdoor exhibition space, owing to the different combination of landscape elements. One side of the wall of the courtyard is made of concrete, while the other side is covered by climbing plants that provide a sense of colour and softness. As for the hardscape, the architect opted for concrete outdoor tiles in different shades of grey and textures, coupled with artistic tiles made by artists.
